Minister confirms government support for Media Act
The Minister for Sport, Media, Civil Society and Youth, Stephanie Peacock has praised the enduring value of commercial radio and confirmed support for new measures to support the sector through the Media Act in a special address recorded for Radiocentre’s Tuning In event last week (17th September).
Reflecting on the importance of the UK radio sector, the Department for Culture, Media & Sport Minister highlighted how listeners value commercial radio news, trust the regular updates and appreciate the companionship that presenters offer.
The Minister also emphasised the new Government’s firm commitment to protecting the future of radio, highlighting measures in the Media Act that safeguard the industry in the digital age. Ofcom is set to begin consulting soon on new powers to regulate voice-activated platforms (such as smart speakers) in order to ensure listeners can continue to access their favourite radio stations on a range of platforms. She also expressed how she is looking forward to working with the commercial radio industry and the team at Radiocentre to ensure long-term success for the sector.
