Radiocentre welcomes Ofcom consultation on regulating voice-activated devices
Radiocentre has welcomed the publication of Ofcom’s first consultation on the implementation of part 6 of the Media Act, which regulates voice-activated devices.
The consultation is the first step towards the introduction of the new regulatory regime, which is initially expected to address smart speaker platforms. Ofcom is seeking views on the principles and methods for its recommendations to the government to designate the specific voice-activated online services (Radio Selection Services) that will need to comply with the new rules.
Ofcom is consulting on a range of areas in order to implement the Media Act, which received Royal Assent in May 2024. A Radiocentre briefing on the Media Act is available here and Ofcom’s roadmap for the implementation process here.
Radiocentre’s CEO Matt Payton says:
“This consultation is a crucial first step in establishing the new regulatory framework for radio listening on voice-activated devices, like smart speakers. As listening habits continue to shift online, it’s essential that listeners can continue to access their favourite radio stations on these platforms. We look forward to working with Ofcom over the coming year as it develops these vital safeguards for the whole radio industry, ensuring a level playing field and securing the future of radio listening in the digital age.”
The consultation closes on Tuesday 18th March. If you have any questions or would like to find out more, contact our Head of Policy, Will Thomson at Will.Thomson@radiocentre.org.
